Squirrels

Some of you may already know about the "creature" that has been living in my attic. It haunts me at night and during the day. It runs and scratches and chews and makes a lot of noise for such a little thing. For a while we thought it was a bird, then mice, and now (thanks to our animal control friend - Ryan) we know it was a squirrel. Last Sunday, we put a trap in the attic to try to catch this thing. On Friday, it finally did. After Ryan came to "take care of it" for me, we discovered that it is a big-mama squirrel and she also had babies in the attic! So far we have only seen one. Come to realize, it is as noisey as it's mama was. At 2:15a.m. and at 6:00 a.m. I thought I was going to have to crawl up there and strangle it with my bare hands. Then I calmed down and thought about that poor baby squirrel who doesn't know where his mama is. It made me sad. So we put another trap up there in hopes that we can reunite them and more importantly, get them out of my attic!! Check out how big the mama is... More to come on baby soon I hope!

O.k., have you even had time to go to the bathroom today with all this blogging?! I loved it though! :-)

Oh, my goodness!! We had the same experience in our Pelham house. Although at first Will put some poison in the attic and the Mama either left or you know what and the babies somehow ended up coming down the drainpipe. There were five I think--It was so awful to watch that I have blocked some of it out. This all happened while Will was away. One baby was hurt or too little or got some poison itself, but could not move. So for days I would check on it just waiting for it to die. I didn't know what else to do. Finally it stopped breathing and I carried it with a shovel out the the woods in the back. I wanted to bury it, but I just could only deal with it for so long and just set it in the leaves. Oh, it was so awful. We had more squirrels the next year and had a trapper come out. He fixed the holes in the attic, too, and trapped them one by one, except not alive. I thought he was just going to trap them and let them go free, but I was mistaken. Normally, I would never hurt any animal, but I have to admit, after months of waking up to their scratching at 5:30 am, I was ready for just about anything. I hope they get the baby and I am glad that yours are still alive.
